One of these days I really need to start following your advice.

Unfortunately and recently I have been living off my overdraft and that is a big no-no. I hope within the next couple paychecks (next weeks at least) I can make my overdraft positive and do better.

I will continue to follow your advice and if you would like I can report back periodically and tell you my progression!

Thanks for the tips etc!

Well, that's not too much of an option when now is the first of the month, the thing you are buying is the rent and you only have half of it in the bank.

Starting a small emergency fund and putting the rest towards debt reduction is a good idea. Perhaps another idea is to get a personal line of credit in case a bigger emergency happens.

What I do is keep a smaller amount of cash as an emergency fund and put the rest of my savings into investments. If an emergency arises, I will use my personal line of credit to cover it temporarily. If too much is drawn from my LOC, I will probably sell some stock pay down the LOC.

Great Post Jennifer!

I agree - TAKE ACTION!!

Every action creates a reaction.

P.S Have you used your new running shoes yet?

It's great advice not giving uncle Sam more then he needs. Most of us though can not live below our means, so I give them the advice to start a savings account, with no interest, by using the government.

Since money seen has a way of finding an expense so fast, I opted in to pay more to the government, and allowed my employer to hold back 15% of my gross, tax it, and then keep it saved.

We find ways to live within our means, so I used that as a strategy to building a savings.

With the cut back in funds, and faithfully keeping up with our tithes and offerings, it's still funny how we still have just enough to get by. :)

All very good points, it's the small things when added up that make a huge difference. Another thing you could do that would be a babystep and really help you along is set up a small automatic withdrawal from your account say every pay for $25 - Chances are you won't miss the money and it'll collect into an emergency fund before you know it.

Jennifer,
I have been following your blog for awhile now and I think you are right on when it comes to an emergency fund vs paying off debt.

Pay off that debt as fast as possible and why not use your credit card for any emergency that crops up. When did anyone think they needed an emergency fund while they were racking up all this debt?

You will see a post on my blog about you soon, I'm really impressed with you realizing the benefits of living frugally at such a young age!
