Yes, its tough getting out of debt. but once you're out, making sure you only charge what you can afford to pay off each money is key.

I know people who've pulled out money from their home, paid off their credit cards and then maxed them out again in a year!

You go girl - nail that debt! There is a reason credit is so easy to come by, it makes oodles of money for the money-lenders... meaning our money 'costs' us so much more... I always prided myself on using money wisely and staying out of the debt hole... until I accidentally found myself $20,000 in debt 2.5 years ago... using methods similar to your own, I have paid off half of that, and got VERY used to living on no money, buying nothing... and have found it strangely liberating. Screw consumerism, living frugal is the sustainable way to go. Op-shops and garage sales are where I find everything I buy, and of course, Trade Me (NZ's version of eBay)... reusing goods is much better for us financially, and for the environment too...

One last item to add to your list, pay off your debt by INCREASING your income, but spending the same, using the excess to settle debt, rather than buy more stuff.

Cheers!

I'm a financial adviser to people in debt over here in the UK and I can tell you, reading from your blog, especially the above, that you won't be someone in debt all your life and will soon enough get out of it.

Your attitude to debt is very healthy and one I wish some of my clients showed towards their own debt.

I enjoyed this post, very refreshing.

Good luck and all the best, Matt (UK).
