Browsing the net this morning and came across your "little cranny on the web" - I think it's a great little cranny!

Anyways, I know what you mean, several years back I was in similar situation. Thinking back, I almost can't believe how little students (high school or college) get taught about finances. Yea, we were taught how to balance a check-book or even carry a ledger, but the day to day financial/debt info wasn't taught, or at least not to me.

Early on, getting credit card approvals and personal loans at the drop of a hat was great, it seemed like easy money, but the vicious cycle got to be to much... When I had enough, I literally read every single book about credit/finances I could get my hands on, including just about all the credit laws. It was a tough road to get back to even, but eventually I did.

Since that time (not long ago), I decided to do my small part to help anyone interested in credit/finances. I threw up a couple credit sites with no gimmicks, no sales pitches, nothing to buy, just helpful info. The site I posted on here, I recently published just a month ago or so. I haven't come across one like it and really think it can benefit people as more and more visit it/submit info. My whole idea is putting a couple sites together with the information I couldn't easily find when I needed it. The few reviews/comments I received have really been a spark in my life. I really enjoy the idea of possibly, just possibly helping someone from the mistakes I made.

Your site does just that! Your articles/blogs will serve as a guide and a warning about debt as different folks come across it. I wish you the best of luck with it and congrats on a well written, great content site!

I hope your investing money in a retirement account girl! Listen to Suze Orman OK! Get all her shows for free on apple itunes. If no iPod, watch via iTunes on computer. I was in your same boat. Now I am jet skiing away from that boat. Uh-oh, WATCH OUT...a dolphin. "WACK"!

I used this letter as a template for a few collection agencies that are after me for payment on Medical debt for a series of surgeries I had a couple years ago. So far I got a response from one agency where the did verify the debt i owe them where they broke down the amount from the original debtor (Their client who's the hospital I stayed in).

The letter says if I don't pay the full amount in the next 30 days they'll forward to a lawyer to process a judgement on me :(. At least it did include a single point of contact to call directly, which I'll probably do in the coming week.

I guess my point is, if you do know you have debt it's probably better to let it rite until the statute of limitation time is met because writing a letter like this to collection agencies can open a much bigger can of worms than the one you're already in.

I have enjoyed reading your website immensely. It has helped me out a lot. Some great advice that I have followed and it's worked.
Here's one additional thing I have picked up on.
I live in New Jersey. If I am correct, a law firm acting on behalf of a so called creditor, has to post a collection bond with the state treasury department. Some of these bottom-feeders feel that they are so above the law, they fail to comply with this. I'm not sure, but this might be the same in other states. And there are other law firms who will counter sue on a contingency basis for violations to the fair debt procedures.

Thanks very much for putting something like this together. I lost my job a year ago (for a year) and defualted on a credit card, it went to a couple of debt collectors, and now is at a law firm. I tried to contact the credit card to start payments when I got a job and some money together but it was at the collections at that point. In speaking with the collection agencey we almost settled, but before doing so it rolled to a law office. I spoke with them (before reading this helpful post.) and tried to negotiate, but they suddenly wanted $1000 more than the last agency... so no deal on my end.

I'm lost in all the info (and lack there of.)

Question 1) Is settleing debt terribly bad to your credit score assuming you already have poor credit?

I plan on sending them a validation letter as above, I plan on ignoring all knocks at my door I'm not expecting. I plan on no longer admiting the debt. Will this lawfirm sell off my debt again? I'm under the impression that since the credit card sent my debt of to collections can I simply ignore this/stall this stuff until the statue of limitations goes away?

Thanks for the posting!

I just visited this weekend. I've been of the opinion that the first - and most "controversial" - guideline doesn't mean to cut down the population, but rather advice not to go past this number once these guidestones actually become necessary in rebuilding a civilization. If it gets to the point where these stones are required in order to tell time or figure out the planet's relation to the sun, chances are something has already reduced the planet's population.

It has become apparent that cash back credit cards have recently been on a steep decline as far as availability goes. Some might say that in these particularly difficult financial times, having CASH BACK would be what they want, ideally.

In 2005, 43 different credit cards offered cash back as a reward. in 2009, there are only 13. But what consumers need to come to realize, is that the cash back reward was usually limited to 15-20 dollars a month. so wouldnt you prefer to get air miles, which may save you much more than 15-20 dollars a month, next time you travel? Or how about something that you use everyday, like fuel. Free fuel is the same thing as free money essentially.

Busineses are the ones who seem to truly benefit from the cash back credit card reward. They don't seem to have a limit per month, rather a .5% on their spendings.

Imagine the fallout for them if we ALL stopped paying. I know it's only a dream but it sure would be fun to watch.
I pay my credit card bills on time and most of the time I send over the minimum payment. Over the past few months, my American Express Blue minimum payment has gone sky high and is now out of my budget. If they had mentioned to me that they would be screwing me with a spiked pipe I never would have taken this card. That's just it, they change the rules whenever they want and we have to comply or suffer their abuse. Even if we pay our bills on time they still screw us.

To all you folks that want to play the high moral side of the fence here- EFF YOU! This is war. Americans are at WAR with this mongrels. All is fair in love and war you know. If that means walking away and defaulting on debt, so be it. TOO BAD! We are all paying for it anyway in our taxes and government bailouts.

All of our parents raised us to be responsible people, perhaps we should have taken some of their financial advice to heart. Bottom line: We are dealing with subhuman PIG F'RS in banks, lawyers, collection agents etc. They should be dealt with extreme prejudice.

THESE COLLECTIONS DOPES CANNOT DO ANYTHING. Especially during a period of discovery they reveal how impotent and big talking they are.

ALL BARK. NO BITE.

Do yourself and your country a favor: DEFAULT AND WALK AWAY!
